Sony-Acquires-GaikaiReports claim that Sony plans to provide access to PlayStation 3 games using the Gaikai streaming service.

This lines up with earlier speculation that the$380 million acquisition of the streaming company by Sony was intended to provide backwards compatibility.

Sources “familiar” wiht the matter told the Wall Street Journal that “the new technology, to be unveiled Wednesday along with the new console, will allow users to play games delivered over the Internet.”

“The streaming service, they added, is designed to use current PlayStation 3 titles on the new console; the new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs.”

There have been rumors aplenty in the run-up to Wednesday’s expected console reveal, including leaked photos of what is purportedly an early prototype of the PS4 controller.
